Mandate Overview

The mandate

Brazil operates the most complex e-invoicing regime in the world, segmented across four document types managed by SEFAZ (state tax authority) and federal entities: NF-e for goods (live since 2008), NFS-e for services, CT-e for freight, and NFCom for telecommunications. The national unified NFS-e standard, replacing thousands of municipal variants, became mandatory January 1, 2026. Brazil's tax reform (IBS, CBS, IS) introduces new mandatory data fields on all e-invoices from January 1, 2026.

Flowie Coverage

How Flowie supports Brazil

Flowie tracks Brazil's e-invoicing reforms and supports NF-e and NFS-e XML generation. Local certification partners are typically required for full SEFAZ clearance and municipal NFS-e submission, particularly for the new national standard's unified deployment.

FAQ

Common questions

When do Brazilian e-invoicing rules apply to my company?

Brazil's e-invoicing has been mandatory for goods (NF-e) since 2008, with services (NFS-e), freight (CT-e), and telecoms (NFCom) following. From January 1, 2026 the unified national NFS-e standard becomes mandatory and the IBS/CBS/IS tax-reform fields apply to all e-invoice types.

Do I need a Brazilian local partner?

For full clearance through SEFAZ and the multi-thousand municipal NFS-e endpoints, most international platforms partner with a Brazilian e-invoicing specialist. Compliance complexity comes from the federal-state-municipal structure, not just format.
